Dryden is my favorite character in Escaflowne. He didn't have too big of a part, but I think he's great! He's a rich merchant and is engaged to Princess Milerna (set up in childhood). He incredibly intelligent and knowledgable and it's for this reason that Milerna and the others come for his aid. When Escaflowne is badly damaged and Van is injured and unable to heal until Escaflowne is fixed, Dryden figures out how to call he people who made Escaflowne. The price is outrageously high and completely impossible for them to pay, even if Allen sold his airship. Dryden agrees to pay immediately, even though it's enough to put him back for quite a while, saying that he'd do anything to impress a lady. He's very kind with Princess Milerna and tries to gently convince her why he's such a great catch. And he's a true gentleman too. When you first meet him he's setting a captive mermaid free. Princess Milerna doesn't return his affections at all because she loves Allen. Dryden's truly a free spirit. He hold strong moral values, rather than the preprogrammed chivalry than Allen shows. He doesn't care what anyone thinks of him, but is also a great guy in general (I mean who would trade in their entire fleet to help out someone they just met?!). He's very self-assured, and shows it with Milerna. He's completely convinced that she will fall in love with him. His attitude completely contrasts (very well) to the other characters of the show. He seems to be more of a real person.
