Van has a really big secret. He is a Draconian (descendant
of the peoples of Atlantis) through his mother, so he has wings!
He reveals himself to save Hitomi. Merle already knew. Draconians
are not well accepted as the Atlanteans caused great destruction (inadventently)
with their machine to make their dreams come true. This machine created
Gaia. Van's Escaflowne is also very rare as it has the ability to
change into dragon-form and fly.
Van becomes bent on revenge and fighting better, so he makes a blood
pact with Escflowne so that it will also obey his thought. He later
finds out that if Esaflowne is damaged or hurt, so is he until it is fixed.
In a great fight against Dilandau and his dragonslayers Van kills all of
Dilandau's dragonslayers in a blood frenzy, but as he is going for Dilandau
he is haunted by their dead spirits and becomes wearing of fighting, even
of living. He goes into the land of the dead, but Merle and Hitomi are
able to save him.
Van is a romantically frustrated individual. He gets so much
into revenge and all hat he doesn't see his own feelings for Hitomi.
He just thinks that he needs her for her ability to help him fight the
enemy. What he doesn't know is that the fate of Gaia is intertwined
with the two of them being together. This is why Zaibach uses their
destiny machine to bring Allen and Hitomi together. Van sees this
and is crushed,
finally realizing his feelings for Hitomi. After Hitomi is sent back
to Earth Van is able to bring her back. Van makes peace with his
brother. Hitomi and Folken are transported to Zaibach and Van rescues
Hitomi. Van's brother dies trying to defeat the Zaibach leader.
Van and Hitomi finally realize their love, Hitomi goes back to Earth, so
Van is left girlfriendless (yeah, a nice a happy ending: brother dies,
true love has to go home....) I think they're able to visit though...
