Van is the prince of Fanelia who was transported to Earth during
his dragon slaying ritual. He killed he dragon and got the energist
(which are hearts of dragons), and he and Hitomi
were transported to back to Gaea where he was crowned King. Soon
after, the Zaibach empire (or more specifically Dilandau
and his men) came and destroyed everything and burnt Fanelia to the ground.
Van, Hitomi, and his guymelef Escaflowne escaped. They met up with
Allen and Merle.
Van and Merle had
been friends since they were kids. Van vows revenge on Zaibach, but
is daunted as their guymelefs are invisible and can fly! Hitomi helps
him to be able to see them. His parents were Gaou and Vari, king
and queen of Fanelia. Van has an older brother, Folken,
who failed the dragon slaying ritual and was never heard from again. Van
has much resentment towards him for leaving as they were very close as
children. Van is rash and impulsive, has a flaring temper, but is
also quite loyal and kind in his own way. His rage often blinds him
and overcomes him in situations. He studied sword fighting under
the same instructor as Allen.
